This was my first time placing an order with them online. The packing and tracking were top-notch, but the only minor issue was that it took a couple of days to ship. Just a heads up, it wasn't an issue for me since I wasn't in a rush, so consider that when you place your order.

I called to inquire about my order on a Saturday and actually got to speak with a person. He looked into the order, found out there was a mistake, and sorted it out. The drives were shipped out on Monday afternoon, and I got them by Saturday afternoon (thanks to UPS delays from bad weather). I swapped the drives into the trays of my old Dell server, and they’re working like a charm. The drives were nicely packed in anti-static bags and bubble wrap, plus they were cushioned in even more bubble wrap inside the box. They even come with labels showing the power-on hours. 10/10, I’d definitely buy from UNIXSurplus again.

These guys really know how to pack hard drives securely. Not a single drive showed up dead on arrival. Their customer service was also stellar when it came to price matching with their eBay store for a bulk purchase. My only gripe is the shipping time; it took a whole week for my order to go out. I mean, we’ve all gotten used to Amazon's speedy deliveries, but come on, Unix Surplus, it should be 3 days max for an order that doesn’t involve a full server setup and testing. I placed my order early on a Monday, and it didn’t ship until Friday. The testing verification stickers indicate they were all checked on the same day, so it doesn’t seem like that was the reason for the hold-up. All in all, though, it was a really good experience, and I’ll surely be back for more.

I bought an 8TB internal hard drive, but it showed up defective. I managed to power it on, but no luck getting it recognized in BIOS, no matter what I tried. Now it’s just a pricey paperweight.

The item showed up quickly; the packaging was top-notch and in a solid shipping box. The motherboard looks brand new and is in great shape. I appreciated the pre-shipment call and email to confirm the delivery address. I did run into an issue with a defective memory module, but Nick sent out a replacement right away. All's well now!

While testing the X9SRL-F, I initially thought the motherboard had faulty PCIe slots. Sadly, I couldn't check all the slots until after the 30-day return window had closed.

I went ahead and opened an RMA to see if anything could be done. However, I received no reply, not even a note about the return period being over. This happened due to a mix-up on their website that directed the RMA request incorrectly. Because of this, they lose a star in my book.

On the bright side, the motherboard turned out to be functional, which I figured out after getting another X9SRL-F that exhibited the same issues. It seems there’s a very subtle bug that only shows up if you:
1. Have more than two PCIe cards plugged in.
2. At least one of those cards is relatively new (like an NVMe adapter) in comparison to the motherboard.
3. Hit a bit of bad luck with the CMOS reset.

The third point is crucial; when you clear the CMOS, the default setting for Active State Power Management (ASPM) is set to "Disabled," but sometimes it doesn’t quite register, and it remains enabled, even if it appears to be off. With ASPM turned on, the other two factors of the bug combine to make the motherboard very unreliable, especially affecting the x4 slots that are farthest from the power supply.

To work around this bug, you need to enable ASPM, save and reset, then manually turn it off again and save and reset, which ensures the setting is truly disabled. I don’t blame UNIXSurplus for not catching this super rare bug during their testing, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the motherboard is defective.

They were out of the items we ordered, but they reached out to us for approval to send a different brand instead. This took a few days, and then the item was finally shipped. It definitely took longer than we thought it would. So, I’m knocking off one star for the delay from when we bought it to when it actually arrived. But once we got the hardware set up, it worked like a charm. All in all, I'm satisfied with what we got and would consider shopping with them again, as long as we’re not in a rush.

A few parts were broken, likely due to shipping, but that’s on their packaging.

I've done a bunch of business with UNIXSurplus, both directly and via eBay, for whole servers and parts. John, Tay, and especially Justin have given top-notch customer service, and I've been pleased with all the gear I've gotten. Everything I ordered was truly ready to use and seemed to be tested before it was sent out. The prices are usually fair and competitive, and while shipping might add a bit to the cost, all the stuff I purchased was packed super well, and the shipping time was pretty quick.
